Advocates Celebrate Environmental Protection Agency Announcement

LAS VEGAS, NV – Today the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced new standards concerning power plants. These new protections address power plant pollution — slashing coal ash, mercury, arsenic, soot, toxic wastewater, and other toxins, as well as carbon pollution from coal-fired plants and new gas-fired power plants.

Shelbie Swartz, Executive Director of the Institute for a Progressive Nevada, issued the following statement:

“Today’s action to curb pollution from power plants will make a real difference in slashing climate pollution and protecting our health and environment. Nevadans applaud President Biden and EPA Administrator Regan for responding to the urgent need for climate action with strong standards that will cut toxic power plant pollution – a major step towards achieving the President’s goal of slashing climate pollution in half by 2030. Their bold leadership will also clean up our air and water, making a significant difference in the health of families across the country, including families in Nevada. There is still more work to be done to ensure power plants operate without harm to neighboring communities or the environment – like setting carbon pollution standards for existing gas-fired power plants – but this is a great day for clean air and our health.”
