Biden Administration Announces New Rule to Close ‘Gun Show Loophole’
LAS VEGAS, NV – Today, the Biden-Harris Administration announced a new rule seeking to close the gun show loophole. This is not a new law but rather an expansion of the definition of licensed firearm dealers. Under the new rule, background checks would be required for those who buy firearms at gun shows or online.
Shelbie Swartz, Executive Director of the Institute for a Progressive Nevada, issued the following statement:
“With more than 115,000 people shot and killed or wounded each year, the human cost of gun violence in America is staggering. Families, friends, and entire communities suffer the long-term and irreparable impacts of these tragedies — physically, emotionally, and financially. We applaud President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris for their continued dedication to curbing this crisis across the country — but specifically for Nevadans who lose their loved ones or their lives every single day. The announcement of new federal rules aimed at stopping illegal gun purchases is a welcome step toward stopping bad actors from purchasing firearms at gun shows. This is the biggest expansion of background checks since the 1993 Brady Bill. No one should be able to purchase a firearm online or at a gun show to get around background check laws — and lives are put at stake every time someone is able to exploit loopholes to access a firearm. We proudly supported closing the gun show loophole in Nevada during the 80th Nevada Legislative Session. It’s fantastic to see President Biden’s Adminstration taking similar steps toward ending gun violence.”
